Wild Weasel
From the start of the Vietnam War, North Vietnamese and Russian
forces developed intricate antiaircraft systems to ward off
American fighter raids. The North Vietnamese air defense network
became much more powerful with the introduction of the
surface-to-air missile. These SAMs were big, fast, and
dangerous; pilots described these thirty-five- foot long missiles
approaching at Mach 3.5 as "flying telephone poles." To overcome
this defense system, the U.S. Air Force developed the Wild Weasel
patrol.
The basic concept of the Wild Weasel was to protect an airborne
strike force by suppressing the enemy's air defense systems.
Initially, North American F-100Fs performed this work, but they
lacked the necessary performance (only two of the original seven
survived their missions) and were replaced by the two-seat F-105F.
In a Wild Weasel patrol, the F-105s would be the first aircraft
to enter the combat area and jam the enemy radar and missile
systems. The Thunderchief would then loiter while the strike
force attacked, usually being the last to leave. Although the
F-105's equipment was top-notch and continually improved, Wild
Weasels succeeded because of highly trained aircrews. Pilots
performed gut-wrenching, high-g maneuvers to evade the SAMs,
while the "bear" in the back, the Weapon Systems Operator,
monitored the electronic gear.
In "Operation Linebacker," the all-out air war against North
Vietnam, Wild Weasel crews flew three or more missions a day
against the heaviest air defenses in history. In December of
1972, during "Operation Linebacker II," the enemy unleashed
clouds of SAM's, as many as 220 a day. Yet Wild Weasel patrols
led by F-105s still enabled the Air Force to inflict heavy damage
from the air.
